An exploration of the captivating work and mystical outlook of the
modern artist Remedios Varo, focusing on her years in Mexico City
This publication offers a definitive look at the artistic
practice of Remedios Varo (1908–1963) following her emigration
from Spain to Mexico City in 1941. Her work from 1955 to 1963 made
a lasting contribution to modern art and the legacy of Surrealism.
In Remedios Varo: Science Fictions, fresh historical and material
findings establish the integral relationship between Varo’s
layered interests—in alchemy, architecture, magic, mysticism,
philosophy, and science—and her beguiling technical approach to
art making. Essays detail specific works’ complex stories and
spectacular surfaces. An illustrated taxonomy of Varo’s artistic
techniques, including automatic mark making as well as careful
manipulation of materials and media, offers new insights into the
artist’s craft. An illustrated inventory of a major portion of
Varo’s library—published here for the first time—reveals the
artist’s engagement with a wide range of subjects. Stunning new
photography of many of her artworks are presented within a dynamic
geometric design inspired by the artist’s work. Situating Varo as
a woman working in midcentury Mexico City and living among a
tight-knit community of local and émigré artists, poets, and
thinkers, the catalogue illuminates the complex worldview that
shaped her search for individual and collective transcendence.

Fifty Key Figures in Latinx and Latin American Theatre is a
critical introduction to the most influential and innovative
theatre practitioners in the Americas, all of whom have been
pioneers in changing the field. The chosen artists work through
political, racial, gender, class, and geographical divides to
expand our understanding of Latin American and Latinx theatre while
at the same time offering a space to discuss contested
nationalities and histories. Each entry considers the artist's or
collective's body of work in its historical, cultural, and
political context and provides a brief biography and suggestions
for further reading. The volume covers artists from the present day
to the 1960s-the emergence of a modern theatre that was concerned
with Latinx and Latin American themes distancing themselves from an
European approach. A deep and enriching resource for the classroom
and individual study, this is the first book that any student of
Latinx and Latin American theatre should read.
Affirming Methodologies: Research and Education in the Caribbean
centres local and indigenous ways of knowing in research and
education praxis in the Caribbean. The research methodologies and
pedagogies are presented in this book within an Affirming
Methodologies framework. They bring forward localized
epistemologies whereby Caribbean ways of being and knowing are
affirmed, and the expected western hierarchies between researcher
and researched are removed. The chapters present approaches to
knowledge construction and knowledge sharing based on practices,
lived experiences, traditions, language patterns, and rituals of
Caribbean communities. The importance of an Affirming Methodologies
approach is demonstrated, and the characteristics of culturally
affirming research methodologies and pedagogies in diverse
environments including Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the
Caribbean diaspora in Aotearoa New Zealand and Canada are explored
and presented. Grounded on an understanding of the authors'
Caribbean positionality, ontological distinctions within the
Caribbean research context are considered. This book moves forward
from a decolonizing methodology approach, and, as such, the
chapters are written, not in opposition to, or tested against
Eurocentric approaches to research, but deeply rooted in a
Caribbean ethos. This book will engage researchers (both
qualitative and quantitative), postgraduate students, academics,
practitioners, policymakers, community workers, and lay persons who
seek to employ culturally relevant local and indigenous research
approaches in their work. Each chapter offers practical suggestions
on the 'how' of research practice, making them accessible,
relevant, and flexible for novice and seasoned researchers alike.

This book brings an intersectional perspective to border studies,
drawing on case studies from across the world to consider the ways
in which notably gender and race dynamics change the ways in which
people cross international borders, and how diffuse and virtual
borders impact on migrants' experiences. By bringing together 11
ethnographies, the book demonstrates the necessity for in-depth
empirical research to understand the class, gender and race
inequalities that shape contemporary borders. In doing so the
volume sheds light on how migration control produces gendered
violence at physical borders but also through the politics of
vulnerability across borders and social boundaries. It places
embodied narratives at the heart of the analysis which sheds light
on the agency and the many patterns of resistance of migrants
themselves. As such, it will appeal to scholars of migration and
diaspora studies with interests in gender.
This book explores the argument that Portugal has been an exception
to the trend of political upheaval and electoral instability across
Southern Europe following the financial crisis and the bailout
period. It does so by mapping and exploring in-depth three key
dimensions: the governmental arena, the party system and
citizens’ political attitudes. The five chapters in this edited
volume show that a number of factors combine to make Portugal not
only a very stimulating case study, but also an exception within
the South European panorama: the stability of its party system, and
that of the mainstream parties’ electoral support in particular;
the quick recovery of political attitudes after the end of the
bailout period (2011-2014); the absence of competitive populist
challengers until 2019, despite high levels of populist attitudes
amongst the citizenry; the successful and stable union between
anti-austerity parties supporting the socialist government (dubbed
the ‘Contraption’) and its adoption of an ‘austerity by
stealth’ model. This book shows that it is possible to combine
critical junctures and political stability, responsiveness and
responsibility, through the study of one of the most intriguing
cases in Southern Europe in the last decades. The Exceptional Case
of Post-Bailout Portugal will be of interest to students,
researchers and scholars of Political Science and European Studies.
The chapters in this book were originally published as a special
issue of the journal, South European Society and Politics.
C. G. Jung, despite not being widely known for his views on
sexuality or the treatment of sexual issues, made extensive
contributions to understanding the complexities of this field
throughout his life. In Jung and Sex, Edward Santana makes the case
that reclaiming this knowledge can address substantial problems
with current treatments and support many who struggle with sexual
issues. This thorough exploration of Jung's approach to sexual
issues presents a wide-ranging new look at his work and adds
contemporary perspectives for helping those suffering with sexual
difficulties. The book calls for an important bridging of clinical
perspectives to address the contemporary challenges of complex
sexual issues and brings attention to a large body of Jung's work
on human sexuality, ranging from pioneering thoughts on sexual
expressions of the soul to understanding ways to treat sexual
symptoms. Jung and Sex provides a comprehensive analysis of Jung's
views on, and clinical approaches to, sexual issues and treatments,
using this knowledge in order to help those with sexual problems
and the professionals who support them. It is an essential text for
understanding critical dimensions of human sexuality. Jung and Sex
is an important contribution that closes a gap in the literature of
Jungian psychology. It offers unique insights into the subject for
Jungian psychotherapists, analytical psychologists, sex therapists,
and relationship counselors. The book also supports the work of
academics and those interested in contemporary applications of
Jungian and post-Jungian studies.

This book examines VOX, the first major and electorally successful
populist radical right-wing party to emerge in Spain since the
death of General Franco, and the restoration of parliamentary
democracy in the late 1970s. In December 2018, VOX, a new party on
the populist radical right, entered the Andalusian regional
parliament, and played the role of kingmaker in the ensuing
government formation discussions. Since then, under the leadership
of Santiago Abascal, VOX has earned political representation in
numerous local, regional and national elections. The party
attracted more than 3.6 million votes in the November 2019 general
election, making VOX the third largest party in the Spanish
Congress. In two years, the party has become a key political
challenger and an important player in Spanish politics. This book
explains the origins of the party, its ideology and relationship
with democracy, its appeal with voters, and its similarities with
(and differences from) other populist radical right parties in
Europe. It draws upon a rich source of domestic as well as
cross-national survey data and a systematic analysis of party
manifestos which provide a detailed account of the rise of VOX and
what its emergence means for Spanish politics. This volume will be
of interest to scholars of comparative politics, political parties,
voters and elections, Spanish politics, the populist radical right
and populism in general.

The rise of political instability and terrorism necessitates a
reassessment of various tourism policy issues. This book focuses
upon evaluating the impact of terrorist political conflicts and
other types of instability on the tourism sector and considers the
practical implications for countries being adversely affected by
these episodes. Over the last decades, tourism has been adversely
affected by a wide range of problems such as economic crises,
social conflicts, political instability, terrorism and wars. Each
of these, and their consequences on tourism, confirms the need to
understand more about potential mitigating policy interventions in
different contexts. This book includes six chapters exploring a
wide range of themes related to instability and tourism using
innovative approaches and considering different countries for their
research. Precisely, countries such as Turkey, Ukraine, Jordan,
Egypt and Nepal are under analysis. The articles published in this
special issue were written by authors affiliated with universities
in the USA, New Zealand, Spain, Egypt, Jordan and Bulgaria. All
selected papers underwent a rigorous double-blind review process
before final revision and acceptance. The chapters were originally
published in a special issue in the Journal of Policy Research in
Tourism, Leisure & Events.

Henry Fielding is most well-known for his monumental novel Tom
Jones. Though not necessarily common knowledge, Henry Fielding
started his literary career as a dramatist and eventually
transitioned to writing novels. Though vastly different in their
approach and subject, there is a common thread in Fielding's work
that spanned his career: marriage. Errors and Reconciliations:
Marriage in the Plays and Novels of Henry Fielding explores this
theme, focusing on Fielding's fascination with matrimony and the
ever-present paradoxical nature of marriage in the first half of
the eighteenth-century, as a state easily attained but nearly
impossible to escape.
